Library morning in the life: 28th July 2011

Today at work, I:
- Was in early again today. This time, I went to sit on the desk while my colleague went to turn things on, etc. We discovered that some of the OPACs weren’t working. Something to do with not be able to connect to the internet. Mysterious.
- Stamped and ‘checked in’ the newspapers.
- Took some payments for fines.
- Filled in the rail warrant form for the cataloguing course.
- Was almost all on my own in the office when everyone else but one person left to go to the repeat performance of the all staff meeting.
- Stamped lots of old nursing books ‘withdrawn’ and put them on a trolley to be taken away and re-cycled (or, more probably, just binned). They’d been living in my drawer since my drawer was my predecessor’s drawer, waiting for an academic to make a decision about whether or not we should keep them.
- Catalogued Zacchaeus (see yesterday’s post).
- Looked for a book for a member of staff, but could not find it, alas.
- Sat at the library desk again, and dealt with the remaining telephone messages.
- Dealt with a lady who wanted to take out lots of 7-day loans and couldn’t (people can only borrow six 7-day loans), so I checked whether or not we had them in a standard loan and my colleague went with her to help her find them on the shelf.
- Went back to the office and processed and catalogued a book donated by the Education department.
- Re-catalogued some of the lovely Maths Quest sets.
- Was glad to be told I could go home at 1pm. I was planning to take time off in lieu (accrued due to working some weekend days recently) and leave at 2pm, but as lunch doesn’t count (as it were) I was able to leave at 1pm, which was very nice.

Sounds like there is a lot of variety in your job – dealing with the public and meetings as well as cataloguing and other things. Also there seem to be a lot of perks like cakes and chocolates
Yes, it can be quite varied, which is good. I think I’m just lucky to work in an office with lots of other people who like (and are generous enough to bring in) cakes and chocolates!
