Over the past few weeks I’ve made several pairs of grey, fingerless, gloves. When does a glove become a mitten? Ah, when the whole hand is covered but the individual fingers do not have individual covers, if that makes sense. This is according to Wikipedia. So, these are gloves, although they could also be classed as gauntlets, apparently. They’re not particularly exciting, but I’ve been making them at the request of members of Mr C’s reenactment group. They reenact Napoleonic battles, and Napoleonic-era-style tents are not the warmest places to sleep in, even with modern-day sleeping bags. So, I made Mr C some gloves, and then his fellow reenactors asked for some, too.
I’m not sure how authentic they are – certainly not in terms of material, because they’re not real wool – but I tried to get wool of the kind of colour likely to be worn by poor soldiers back then. They are also quite coarse and thick (so hopefully warm) and seem large to me compared to the ones I’d previously been making for library colleagues!
I’m quite glad to have finished them now, so I can get back to the ‘jubilee’ scarf, which I still haven’t finished! I’ve got about 140 rows to go to get to 600, but I’ve got a horrible feeling I’ll need to do more rows to make it the required length! Oh well.
