Smith the Lonely Hedgehog

Today’s “sweet book of the day” was Smith the Lonely Hedgehog, by Althea. Just Althea. Althea’s full name is Althea Braithwaite, and she has written lots of books for children. She is also a fused glass artist.

Smith the Lonely Hedgehog (first published in 1970) is about a rather shy young hedgehog called Smith (unsurprisingly!), who’s worried he’ll always be lonely. Don’t worry, there’s a happy ending. There’s even a sequel, I’ve now discovered.

A lot of Althea’s books are now out of print, but you can find Smith…and the sequel on lulu.com.
